Shiloh Shepherds are a rare breed developed in New York state, by Tina Barber, more commonly known as MaShiloh. Tina's family have been breeding German Shepherds for many decades before Tina, disappointed in the conformation she was seeing in the breed, decided to pull her dogs from the AKC and work to recapture the type of Shepherd that she remembered from her youth.
The Shiloh Shepherd evolved from Tina's effort to breed for good health, size and fantastic temperaments. All breeding stock must be evaluated and certified for good hips, hearts and elbows as well as passing a temperament test. As more genetic tests become available, further tests are being added to those mandated by the club to ensure the future of the breed is healthy for generations to come. Ultimately the Shiloh will achieve recognition with the major kennels clubs, however in the meantime the breeding program is overseen by the Breed Warden and the ISSR - International Shiloh Shepherd Registry. This body maintains all of the pedigree and registration information for the breed.

Shilohs have many devoted followers - there is a strong supporters club - the SSDCA (Shiloh Shepherd Dog Club of America) who support and promote their breed. It is important to look for an SSDCA/ISSR affiliation if you are interested in purchasing a Shiloh as although other breeding groups do exist they do not follow the strict breeding program established by the Breed Founder.
In order to experience the temperament unique to Shiloh Shepherds, it is important to ensure you are getting a true Shiloh from an ISSR registered breeder.
